Who is Emmy?

Artist Statement:

I have found my visual language through painting and photography. My work speaks about restarting a moment in time that would otherwise go un noticed, what I refer to as the “blindingly obvious”. Whether that be an animal, a landscape, a self portrait, dancer or left objects. The speed at which I work preserves the gesture of these moments that define me, as an individual in society. I tend to generally work from life but many times I prefer to work from still photography due to its distinct nature of capturing what I refer to as “action and speed” or the “blink“. The blink: that fraction of time, that second or fraction of a second, that is usually lost is what interests me. The lapse of time where the retina or the brain is not getting input and is visually unaccounted for. The canvas allows me to restart these moments within moments. My paint actions and applications are fast never less accurate. It’s my projection of my resuming of time. It is physical. I move, I dance, I fight and float around the canvas to create what is in front and felt by me. I observe, not only look. In observing, I am not only seeing. I am able to transfer the still blinks with life onto the canvas. I investigate with many mediums. I work subtractively by taking away what is unnecessary, I work additively to bring out the energy and light from these moments.

Thematic elements in my work are driven by the individual vs the self. I observe how the energy changes between individuals and scenarios. I trap these observations in my mind or in a photograph and translate this onto the canvas. Extremes are a fundamental part of my work.  To be happy? To love? To hate, to doubt. To be abandoned or to be left alone?  I paint the lapse of time in between these questions that we ask ourselves.

Bio:

Shea is an avid equestrian and lifelong athlete. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art from Skidmore College in 2010. She has shown in local Philadelphia area galleries and across the United States. Shea can also be found painting in Florence, Italy where she has been perusing graduate studies. She is drawn to the vibrant historical culture and philosophical conversation.
